This was my response to my friend Alan Dunn’s article on Business Insider regarding why purchasing a domain name was important for a company. Special thanks to El Silver’s blog article.

It’s great to see an article about the real value of domain name investing, which should be the first, and continuing investment, for any company.

THIS IS A LONG COMMENT, BUT IT IS PROFESSIONAL ADVICE THAT CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMPANY’S SUCCESS. HOPEFULLY MY COMMENT WILL SUM UP THIS ARTICLE AND FILL IN THE BLANKS OF WHY DOMAINS ARE PARAMOUNT IN A COMPANY’S SUCCESS.

FACT: Companies spend 25% of their annual budget in advertising. This can be meausred in millions of dollars a year for their annual advertising budget. This covers every “traditional” advertising medium, which New Media experts label as “TV, Magazine, Radio, Newspaper, Banner ads, Adwords, and others”.

FACT: Every company has an “online presence”. Will your company’s presence only be represented by your company name, which may not define the prodservs you offer? Wil you need to spend thousands of dollars monthly for SEO work to manipulate your position in the Search Engine results? Or will you have an online presence that IS your prodservs?

Let’s look at a $10,000 budget for advertising and see how far it takes your company in the advertising and marketing world. You’ll quickly discover that you can’t get a decent ad agency for that amount, so you have to create your own marketing campaign. If you go the traditional route, which has been embedded in the minds of business owners for over a century, you will find that in about a month, regardless of what traditional advertising method you use, your $10,000 is GONE. Zip. Nada. Let’s hope you received some eyeballs and conversions with your investment in any of these “vapor marketing” methods.

On the other hand, invest $10,000 in a keyword descriptive domain name that eliminates your competition in their effort to “lock” down their prodservs online. I call this a “keyword lock” for your company. Do you sell “fur slippers”? Then owning that combination of keywords, and hopefully with the .COM extension, you’ve just captured the “keyword lockdown” of your prodservs online. This is a greatly rewarding experience, and NEVER has a smart marketing director of a company owning a keyword “lock” domain for the company’s prodservs SOLD that domain. I will tell you WHY that never happens as you read on —

If you own the “keyword lock” domain name, every time your competitors use that keyword phrasing of the domain name you own, they are simply doing one thing: Promoting your website. So if you owned “furslippers dotcom”, your competitors will be PROMOTING YOUR WEBSITE every time they use that phrase in their advertising or marketing. Customers type in “furslippers dotcom” so they can find what exactly what they want, and your domain name controls the prodservs the user is looking for. It doesn’t end (if you keep it renewed). The domain name continues to work for you nonstop, all day, all night, all year long. Additionally, owning the keyword lock domain name gives your company a huge jump in prestige. Your company IS the keyword of the prodservs you and your competitors are selling.

When your advertising budget has been spent, and you think “man, my agency sucked, and we chose the wrong ad campaign. That hurt us,” your ad money spent is gone forever. Many companies suffer a bad financial quarter or even longer, when investing in a “wrong” ad/marketing campaign. Every company knows what if feels like to lose huge amounts of money in advertising, where it’s even worse when you hire an ad agency to provide you with what you hope your customers will grasp about your prodservs, and their campaign doesn’t perform.

HOWEVER, this is the Big Secret: With a domain name, defining your keyword prodservs, you can use the domain to simply blast it out in any advertising, or just let the domain point to your website where you’ll get typein traffic to your site from online users, although this is NOT the reason to buy a domain name. The real reason behind buying a keyword lock domain name is that you now OWN YOUR COMPETITION and that the product/service (prodservs) you sell are “locked” to your company, identifying and BRANDING your company with your prodservs (and your competitors’ prodservs). Your competitors can’t promote that phrase online, offline, anywhere, without actually promoting your company because you own that domain phrase.

The most famous example of a large company buying their “prodservs” online and “owning their competition”, is Johnson & Johnson’s purchase of “Baby.com”. Nobody knows what they paid, but rumors say it was around $2.5 million. That was just a small percentage of the J&J ad budget. However, that domain brought in hundreds of thousands of users who simply typed into their browsers “Baby.com”. They were amazed at the profits that were returned by the ownership of Baby.com.

What they were more amazed at was the fact that the following year, this juggernaut marketing “asset” only cost them $10 to renew. No further expenditures. No need for ad agencies to help promote “baby.com”, because it worked on its own.

Think of a domain name in this way, and your company WILL invest hundreds, or thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and even millions of dollars in capturing the keyword “lock” domain name for your prodservs.

Simply said: A keyword descriptive domain name is an “appreciable marketing asset”. It promotes your prodservs for you, hinders your competition, grows in value each year you use it, and costs pennies a day to maintain.

There’s no “equal” to a great domain name in advertising and marketing. In fact, there is no equal to any asset investment that isn’t affected by economic conditions. Domains work for you, and increase in value, and give you the ROI you don’t want to lose in a stupid ad campaign.

Marketing professionals reading this should re-read it two or three more times to understand exactly where the power of domaining lies, because they’ll find it resides in defining their prodservs online and offline, capturing that phrase, and OWNING IT.

As most domainers know, I was one of the few domain buyers looking at the 3D and Future Trend domain buying strategy back in 2004. I also let the cat out of the bag when it was sleeping just fine in there. I revealed my strategy on Monte Cahn’s “DomainMaster Radio” interview in October 2006.

Guess what? For all you old-timers, it’s time to “Erase Your Head!”

Those future trend domains are now maturing faster than expected and have started selling nicely, thank you. My domains were purchased from mainly OOTB, but I also bought domains from private sellers and in auctions and domain “listing” sites, like Buydomains. I got very good prices from all because most of them weren’t keyed in with information I was reading daily in my “future tech” science report searches.

A good buddy and brilliant domainer, Michael Berkens (Em-Bee) posted an article on his blog TheDomains.com about the emergence of value in 3D domains over 3 months ago that has now reached past the 550 (!) comment mark, which I believe is a record for his blog site (and many other domain blog sites). Suddenly 3D domains have gone ballistic. We have noobies picking up domains for OOTB’s and getting four figure offers on them within less than six months. Talk about striking it rich!

Now it’s time for me to reveal the secret of 3D, Hologram/Holographic, and other future trend domains: If you’re not investing in now, you will be paying huge prices for them in the next year or two, or kicking yourself for not nabbing them when they began to blossom. Even now, 3D products and services are so huge in consumer trends, and every major corporation is looking at “New Media” advertising, including 3D displays and gimmickry. The public LOVES it. The manufacturers are scrambling, the New Media crowd is falling over itself to jump on this bandwagon, and most of them already have to some extent.

Deloitte, the top financial advisory firm in the world, has a nice pdf to download regarding the direction towards 3D marketing. Get it. (this link is iffy, if it doesn’t work, let us know)

There’s some fun facts right now to impress you with what’s happening just with 3D prodservs.

1) Samsung has sold over 300,000 units of 3D-based TV’s since June 2010. They’re said to own almost 90% of the market in 3D TVs.

2) Sony has said they expect to sell over (read this right) a whopping 2.5 million 3D TV’s in the next year. Expect new technologies to make those TV’s obsolete before the end of 2011. Hey, for now, you can be the coolest house on the block with a 3D TV.

3) Most consumers surveyed about their opinion on 3D entertainment said that other than having cheap 3D optics (glasses), when they get good glasses and a great TV presentation, the experience is fantastic.

4) Drawbacks to 3D consumers talked about were “headaches from bad 3D glasses” and poor migrations of 2D films into 3D films.

5) The “coolest” TV to own right now, under 60 inches, is the Samsung UN55C7000

6) Here’s what we can we expect from 3D advertising: Every major corporation has a 3D New Media campaign already produced, in the works, or planned to head up a campaign. Even billboards on the side of the road will be freaking out drivers… and premiere’s for every new high level product, place, service, will have a 3D ad campaign to back it up. That’s only the start. Every major company is involved.

7) Cellphone apps are being made, along with cellphone technology, to take, project and view 3D images.

My article only covers 3D products and media. There are many other future tech prodservs to immerse your mind and dollars into right now. This is where the big domain money will be in the next 3 years.

I’m offering anyone looking into purchasing Future Trend domains, including 3D, Holograms, Solar, Robotics, Cellphone Apps, Green Prodserves and electric fashions, a FREE place here to discuss their domain purchases, sales, opinions and expectations for future trend domains.

I am opening my blog site and will feature any and all of your submissions, both in comments and domains you are trying to sell. I’m going to do everyone a favor and let my blog be an OPEN FORUM for future trend domains.

If you aren’t on board with future trend domains now, you will be by 2011, but by then, it might be too late to get the current maturing domains for less than $5000, if that.

Have fun, and I look forward to future technology domains and your opinions! Show us what you got and what you’re doing with it!

SUCCESSCLICK™ SET TO REVEAL SECRETS FOR FUTURE DOMAIN SUCCESS

Many domainers are aware that I am a “future trend” domain investor. When I think of getting “treasures”, I think of selling a domain I bought for OOTB prices or even $2000 or less, that I can flip in the future for 1000% profit or more.

It’s apparent that some of the auction houses, including RICK LATONA, also have their eyes directed forward: (Credit to Ron Jackson’s Interview):

LATONA: “The breakout will most likely come in 2011 but for our part, we will be positioning ourselves in 2010 for the inevitable,” Latona said. “New markets mean new players. Expect to hear of people that you had never heard of before. Somewhere out there, there is someone sitting on a killer portfolio of future value domains waiting to pounce. I will be waiting with open arms.“

I’m sure Rick’s arms are outstretched waiting to embrace me soon, and everyone will be surprised, except me. I’ve always believed that pigs can fly – you just have to believe it and see them being loaded onto cargo planes.

The point is, you can profit with the future, too. If you’re investing in domain names and don’t have $50,000 to spend on a domain (could be your wife likes to put your money in CD’s and mutual funds…arggh), you can still make good money spending several hours researching some future trends with phrases you can nab for $7.50 OOTB. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re buying a domain for $50k at retail price and you have $200k behind you to build that domain out to own your competition (this refers to domainers only, not established businesses), then balls to the wall on that.

However, there’s nothing like flipping a domain bought at OOTB pricing for 1000 times that cost. It’s not that hard.

This is my beta lead-in for my email subscription service I’ve just installed at my blog. There’s a touch more I have to wrap up before launch, but it should be soon. I’ve spent very little time on my own projects since 2003 because I liked helping my clients with their domain/marketing/design issues. I’ve enjoyed working with clients in all areas of business with their domains, because I have learned almost every aspect of business promotion and monetization using domain names. That’s like a continuing Masters Degree in “Domaining” for me, which I can pass on to you or your company.

It’s no secret that I’m a big WhyPark.com fan. From having the best head honcho (of any domain industry company) in Craig Rowe, to their CS wizard, Kelly Urqhart, and their PPC pals at Parked.com (I think I’ve heard of names there like “donny, “monte”, “sigmund” and others, ) the fact that setting up websites quickly and effectively at WhyPark is a main focus of mine, and has now proved its benefits faster than I expected.

I own ElectricFashion.com™, and since it wasn’t doing anything at Parked.com, with few visitors, maybe a few pennies a month, I decided that it was time to do a “preemptive” move that I’m surprised I haven’t thought of before and offered to my clients and readers. Well, here it is.

NOTE: I think this is an important strategy to embrace if you have over 100 domains, and many of those domains are branding or generic descriptive domains under 16 characters (no hyphens, numbers, contractions, prepositions, etc.)

Do you want to have a “offensive” defense against “reverse-hijacking” attempts and at the same time have a good chance of getting your domain indexed? (parking your domain at a PPC landing page will NOT advance your domain in the SE’s).

Try this — it gives you a fighting chance:

For this strategic option, you have to consider whether you want to move a domain that is making good money at your PS in order to PROTECT it from possible “reverse hijacking” attempts. If you feel confident where your domain is parked, and you have great domain attorneys, then this doesn’t affect those domains. But what about those domains that aren’t performing as “hello! You have a big vacation coming” revenue generators?

What if you have a generic domain that you know is powerful, and is just waiting for that end-user sale? Ooops! You’re getting attacked by some company who feels your domain is infringing on their copyright, even though you know it’s generic, and should be safe. This happens to domainers every month.

What can domainers do to help PREVENT the kneejerk move by some companies trying to reverse-hijack your domains?

ANSWER: Move your domain from a landing page (like Domainsponsor, TrafficZ, Parked, Sedo, etc) to a content-building site, such as WhyPark.com or other content building sites.

HERE’S THE BIG SCARECROW FOR YOU TO FRIGHTEN THE CROWS: DON’T BE AFRAID TO TELL THE WORLD THAT YOU’RE TMing YOUR DOMAIN!

Set up your new content sites to present the phrases of their domains with a “TM” behind the phrase. Yes, you can start establishing your own TM ownership on your domains by simply presenting the domain consistently with the “TM” mark behind the domain phrase, or the domain itself. Trademarks take five years to be reviewed and established, and the first thing the govt looks at is if you’ve been using your domain phrase clearly marked as a “TM”. The longer you’ve been promoting your domain as a TM, the stronger your case is for you owning that domain phrase.

I’ve digressed. My original story is this: I set up my TM domain ElectricFashion.com™ about a week ago, and the Google-searched phrase “electric fashion” popped up my domain, showing it was indexed within a week of moving it to WhyPark. That’s right, I just noticed that my domain site at WhyPark has been indexed by Google today. If you look up that phrase, I’m in the top 10 results. For those “Google kills those content developer sites” proponents, here’s the news: This domain is parked at WhyPark and is in Google results.

So I’m excited about this — I am moving as many domains not receiving typein traffic over to WhyPark as fast as I can, and adding a Custom Page or two to make things speed up, so to say.

Final Note: I have about 202 domains which made nothing at PS’s now making me about $70-$100 a month in revenue at WhyPark. I have about 3200 domains split at three other PS’s, and only one of the PS’s can triple that amount… and that’s with 7 times as many domains. Granted, I’m a “future trend” domain buyer/flipper, but I’m impressed that I can take domains that made nothing and quickly start generating some monthly income on them through OST. (Organic Search Traffic — or SET “Search Engine Traffic”). Seeing one of my “future trend” domains get indexed on Google in a week is a big jump ahead for my monetization AND resale potential for that domain.

So much for the neggy nellies attacking Whypark’s rapid popularity and proof of monetization revenues going up. I welcome any questions or comments regarding Whypark users’ and their experiences, pro or con, and if you have an issue, I’ll be glad to help resolve them for you.

Happy Domaining!

Hi Gang,

I’m going to give a way a secret I’ve been using for several years. This feature involves a process of “gauging” the popularity of your generic descriptive domain of prodservs. (This may be the biggest DOMAINING TIP you received all year.)

This simple procedure using Gmail has done a lot to help me pinpoint fast-moving topics and pick up domains that are showing if their “trend” is becoming popular. The more articles returned on your alerts, the more popular your generic domain is. Not only that, the alerts bring you news articles that reveal new technologies, prodservs, updates, and fun content to rewrite for your Whypark pages to make the text original.

Remember, these are tests done for NON-TM domains. No brand typos, no trickery, just straight forward facts to help you nab and/or monitor a domain that purely describes the prodservs of ANY company promoting those prodservs online.

The only requirement is that you use Gmail. You can set up alerts here to any email you want: http://www.google.com/alerts (thanks to several reader’s feedback, there’s the link!) You do NOT have to use Gmail, although I use Gmail almost exclusively, and find that it’s the best web-based email service there is. Regardless of the other weird stuff Google is doing, (I imagine we’ll soon we’ll have Google ID chips implanted behind our ears), this service really “delivers the goods for you.

If you’ve been using this Google Alert feature already, or have questions/issues about it, let us know your experiences and results.

Here is the news you’ve been waiting for! Domain history has been made today with the top PPC company acquiring the top domain development company.

WhyPark has been acquired by Parked.com, a great PPC company run by an experienced team. Sig Solares, Donny Simonton and their crew, Christian Higgins, Monty White and the rest have been in the forefront of PPC services, appearing and sponsoring almost every domain conference and buying domains at their auctions. Parked.com has been consistent in their PPC payouts and showing us they are in this game to stay.

What does Parked.com bring to WhyPark.com?

Here’s the first thing to report to make all WhyPark users ecstatic – you all get Parked.com‘s adfeed and expertise in the domain monetization arena. Parked.com has premium feeds, and their payments are made twice a month!

So, for a perfect world joining two powerhouse domain monetization solutions, Parked.com has acquired WhyPark.com. FINALLY WE HAVE LIFTOFF!
More benefits for you: WhyPark.com is integrating Parked.com’s relevant targeted ads that utilize both WhyPark’s and Parked.com’s technology to pay the maximum revenue. An added benefit for WhyPark users is Parked.com’s historical data on search terms where known terms convert the best and pay well based on the domain’s theme. This is a godsend for people with ccTLD, gTLD, SLD, and longtail domains that don’t get typein traffic, and need to get organic traffic with powerful adfeeds.

Ultimately, using WhyPark, backed by the power of Parked.com’s adfeeds, will get a domainer the best possible revenue and help get your domains indexed on the SE’s. A double-burger of domain revenue opportunities, and you have your choice of cheese and other delicious extras!

HOW MY STORY STARTED WITH WHYPARK (The Boring Part of the Blog):

Back in 2002, about four years after I had first started dabbling in domains as an investment, I began to see a need to have my domains built out to websites that people would bookmark. I wanted the “sticky” factor for my domains, and the content would be relevant, helpful, and lead my readers to select and support products I featured on my site. Six years and tens of thousands of dollars later, I was frustrated and looking for someone with the right solution. I had hit brick walls, fought with several “site developers”, and generally thought “This idea just can’t be done.”

Then I got a call from Craig Rowe, President of WhyPark.com, inviting me to come on board and give my best to help this already incredible company with some new ideas and create a positive buzz in the industry. After ten minutes of checking out WhyPark, my prayers were answered. Somebody was doing what I’ve wanted to do for years, and they were doing it RIGHT. It was pure Zen. I jumped at the chance.

No other company that has hired me for my domain consulting ideas was as exciting as WhyPark, with a likable and brilliant president/owner like Craig Rowe. His genius was inspiring to me, and I had to be a part of a team that I trusted, and one I would be proud to say I endorsed and worked for. Craig Rowe is the “Honest Man’s Man”. I would trust him with my life.

My biggest joy from WhyPark, besides working with them, including the wonderful Kelly Urquhart, was that their system gave me a better chance of getting value from my non-typein generic domains, a generic longtail, for example. That main value came from getting the domains indexed and showing endusers what that domain could produce for them. Even better, it showed relevant content to their own prodserv and that the domain can either be a competitor or be in their own arsenal. It’s a great selling point for domain flippers.

So getting some content on my longtails and other niche domains, especially my ccTLD’s, showing the endusers that I have a domain/website that is already creating a “competitive” edge against their product, was a great strategic move in managing my domain portfolio to be “attractive” to the enduser.

IN SUMMATION: WhyPark is the undisputed leader of domain website development, and it is now backed by powerful adfeeds through Parked.com, a company known as the leader in putting PPC payouts in your pocket.

I am sad to say that my work is now done with WhyPark as an executive there, but my goals were achieved and I am dedicated to supporting the growth of WhyPark for years to come!

If you like how WhyPark has progressed in the last year, sign up now!

I’ve got two other hot projects to work on, with plenty more innovative exciting news to reveal for domainers in the near future, so stay tuned! The sky is the limit!

Peace to all…
