WAS THE FUTURE TREND DOMAIN AUCTION™ A MISTAKE?
October 12th, 2011 Posted in General Domain NewsLots of people had an opinion about the Future Trend Domain Auction™ and the domains included. Lots of “domain talking heads” and quite a few amateurs shot down the domains listed and the auction. Did Successclick make a mistake? Or was the mistake a series of lost chances by uninformed buyer to purchase very valuable domain names they don’t understand that are defining prodservs in our near future?
It’s going to be obvious to everyone within a year or two that the domains featured in the first Future Trend Domain Auction™ were worth five to twenty times their asking price, and for those with no reserve… kick yourself for not bidding.
The future is now, and what is known today as “common word and phrases” that sell for significant amounts of money, will be joined by “future trend” domain words and phrases shortly. The reality is that common usage of a prodserv term, whether it’s a one word natural or a 2-3 word descriptive generic phrase, will change in the future because new products and trends appear every month and year.
If you bought the word “cloudcomputing.com” back in 1999, domainers wouldn’t give you more than $100 for it. Imagine its value today.
You laughed like I did when I first saw a domain name regarding printing food in 3D. Now I’m not laughing, and neither will you when you find out that this will be the biggest 3D product on the market within a year.
Forget about your limited research on 3D, thinking that it only applies to television and movie features. It doesn’t, although soon it will. If that link doesn’t spark your interest, this one will.
And to freak yourself out, try this one about car design by 3D.
Although I heard of many negative comments about the Future Trend Domain Auction™, I didn’t see them because they were based on ignorance, and I don’t have time for ignorance. Those who commented negatively either fell into two camps:
1) “Dang, I didn’t get any future trend domains to submit, and I don’t/didn’t have the time to actually look into this area of domain investing. Better go to a blog and make fun of those domains I didn’t understand.”
2) “Dang, I heard about investing in FT domains, but never really learned how to buy domains. This is my first domain investment run, and I just started buying without knowing what the hell I was doing. I thought I’d be rich by now.”
So, those two camps mean nothing to my company, except that if anyone wants to really analyze FT domain investing, and needs guidance in how to move forward in buying valuable domains at OOTB prices, our company provides these services for less cost than it takes for an uneducated investor to spend in a week because they think they found a “niche”.
Cheers!

Keep your head up high, because you are doing the right thing. Success is not measured days and months.
I particularly applaud your taking time out to continue to motivate all of us. Future trend is a winner. So, don’t worry about the small talkers. Good luck and cheers!

I think you had a lot of guts and definitely broke the ice by bringing some awareness to the future trends/tech space.
It’s ironic that domainers are frequently advised to “buy tomorrow” – yet are largely being pitched yesterday’s goods.
Simply because of the break-neck speed of technological developments, hand-registering keyword names (such as cloudcomputing that you mentioned) is the real gold mine; and if done prudently, isn’t at all like playing the lottery. You just need to be realistic, and be willing to constantly prune your holdings.
Every single name that I own (all 750) were hand-registered; and a huge percentage of them are (or were, at the time) based on future trends: but many of them are now considered ‘mainstream’ (e.g., VMapps.com, VMstorage.com, and SentimentAnalysis.org).
I own about 230 ‘Hologram_____.com’ names: And for anyone who thinks that the days of Holograms being part of our everyday lives is 50 years off, take a read through these articles – each of which were published recently.

I guess you are better off waiting until these future trends terms become ‘current day’ terms, then you can sell them for more. Hard to predict what terms will become popular in the future.
By Yaron on Oct 12, 2011
You cant force it… I have plenty of FTD, but I dont waist my time trying to sell them. you must wait until they become Trend domains.

The ultimate problem has been the same with almost every domain auction for years, now.
A Lack Of “Real” End Users.
That means small, medium and large businesses or funded startups …Not Domainers.
How do all the brokers and auction houses make that happen?
I don’t know, I’m just a domainer. I don’t have aspirations to become a broker.
But, there will eventually be a day when the only reason domainers are at auctions …is to SELL!
By admin on Oct 12, 2011
Hi Gene,
Yep, I did have a lot of guts, but now it’s stomachache… lol. J/K.
You make a very valid point about technology and how fast it changes, where things we didn’t even consider 10 years ago are now commonplace. There soon will be a day when this happens with any trend that more than two companies are currently working to bring to market — hopefully with success.
By admin on Oct 12, 2011
Well said, here here! Huzzah!
I don’t think a domain auction really shows the true value and brand power of a domain if only domainers are participating. We all know as domainers to look for the deal, buy low, sell high. End users, on the other hand, should be fighting in bidding wars for our domains at auction. THAT would be an exciting auction to attend or watch live. Who wants to see Rick Schwartz bidding on domains in his own auction? It will prove one thing — there’s no end users there. It’s not easy to get a group of end users together but having a singular topic representing a market segment would be the starting place.

Thanks…I appreciate it.

I’ve always had FT domains in my portfolio. I also have some hologram/holograph .com domains. Other examples I have are some two word nano___.com domains, and some domains relating to commercial space flight which I registered back in about 2000.
Regarding whether holding a FT auction is a mistake or not, only point I would offer in response to that would be that I wouldn’t list what I consider to be my best FT domains in an auction, I’d rather hold them to see if the related technology/idea does become reality.
By jayjay on Oct 13, 2011
I think timing was the culprit here. The current economic recessions in the US and Euro zone have dented the wallets on speculation investment and forced the play on concrete investment instead.
Domain investment in speculative future technology will only yield winners who develop this technology itself (personal thought).
A good example is MRam or (Magnetoresistive random access memory)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mram
One of the major commercial R&D co’s in this field already has MRam.com a ‘win-win’ for them.
on the flip side of speculative domain investment in future technology one has to feel for investors who wasted many thousands (possibly millions) of dollars on the now defunct 2020 moon landings and lunar outpost concept endorsed by the Bush administration.
Now everyone who invested in those lunar-cy domains appears ‘twice shy’ in future trends.
By Gene on Oct 13, 2011
The stomachache will pass, and I do hope that you don’t give up on this noble effort.
I almost signed-up for TRAFFIC for the first time, but then changed my mind; because I realized that it’s really the same group of ‘well known’ domainers who are only there to pat each other on the back, and do yet-another ‘deal’ with their buddies. [Gosh I wish one of those deals would involve using a professional web designer for a change, because I'm sick of seeing all these circa 1999 sites they put up].
And while that’s fine, I really see no place there for ‘outsiders’ – and I would agree that there aren’t very many (if any) end-users attending. The only way they’d probably attend is if the organizers paid to bring them there for a free beach vacation; and even that won’t be a guarantee that they’ll do any bidding. Case-in-point: Will there be any Chief Marketing Officers there from Fortune 500 companies? (I’d be pleasantly surprised to hear that there will be).
But I do think that there are really countless future trends/tech that domainers can focus on and carve-out a niche in – and ultimately make some real money out of.

Stay the course. Your idea is in it’s infancy. Keep on truckin’.
By Leigh on Oct 13, 2011
Stephen, for the hard work and chutzpah on your part to get the auction up and running alone you deserve a medal.
Ahead of it’s time? Definitely! (well it is future trend after all).
A mistake, absolutely not!
This first auction was always going to be an experiment and as your link to the food printer, shows it can change in a second!
To all the naysayers – maybe 3dcakeprinters wasn’t as silly as it sounded eh?.
Just like 3dsnackprinters and 3dcookieprinters and 3dculinaryprinters and print3dfood and foodprinters3d…should I continue?

First time i met a FT domain investor i thought the guy was nuts.
6 years later i met the guy again and he was selling domains like hot cakes.
3 years ago i met this domainer that put registered tons of EV related domain names…
I took him serious that time and regged a few myself.. Over 5 years maybe 10 EV willbe hot as hell.
There is a risk with FT domain names and you need a long term vision and stamina and deep pockets and a boatload of patience…

Hi Theo,
Isn’t every success story based on a man/woman with a new idea that went against common trends? Weren’t most innovators looked at as being “nuts” before they were accepted? I know that a lot of domainers who participate on this blog or support FT domain investments have experienced ridicule many times, yet the FT domain genre isn’t for wimps or people who don’t have the IQ to understand the value of a domain name/phrase based on a prodserv that hasn’t fully developed into the mainstream but is being created right now by several major manufacturers. It takes research and “brand” understanding to buy a Premium FT domain.
Going against the “status quo” and “old school” cranksters who became rich on now-outdated and difficult paths to follow a decade ago is always a lesson in patience. Being an FT Domainer means having what the entertainment business calls “rhino skin” (let the tiny spears the naysayers throw be like flea bites). That doesn’t mean all FT domainers are right, it just means that now with the confidence of so many domain investors in the FT genre, the popular view in this industry is exactly what I worked hard to make “acceptable” starting in 2004. I had lots of help from other domainers, but I also had to defend my thinking against veiled putdowns and “eye-rolling” among the “Decade Domainers”, as I call them (they still operate on the domain biz model that helped them get rich a decade ago, but is now rarely possible for the majority of domainers to use, ie. buying a one word current trend domain for $500k for an “investment”..)
If the emotionally mature domainers could somehow create an organization that represented this business to the end user market as a viable, professional investment opportunity, we would at least drown out some downright embarrassing comments made by one or two successful domainers who have either bipolar disorders, anger issues, or have a clearly obvious desire indicated by their unabashed PUBLIC VITRIOL to indicate they can, and may, destroy anyone they see as a “threat”. Is that how we want our industry to be represented? I hope not, but it concerns me, because I am from the school of “Domains Highest Value Is Determined By End User Sales”, and that this once very secretive and maligned industry can rise up as a legitmate marketing asset for all companies.
To understand the scope of this “bullying” by some domainers over others, isn’t it disturbing to see a domainer who has sold millions of dollars in domains take the “low road” of whiny schoolyard bragging to respond to an article by a domain blogger who simply questioned whether an “auction producer bidding on domains in his own auction” is a conflict of interest? Some commenters even presented the potential of an auction producer bidding on domains in his own auction to “fix” the auction because the auction producer does have inside knowledge, secret agendas, friendships and associations with the best domainers in the world which may manifest marketing/profit benefits the auction participants, including possible end users *cough*, aren’t privy to.) I will probably write a blog to reveal what I know about this, except I know that bad things can happen to those who rock the boat, especially when that boat is a lifeboat and the guy holding the water jug also has a revolver in his hand. The first person he shoots is the person in the boat he thinks also has a weapon. (this is figurative, people)
My goal is to bring the domain industry out of the petty, childish and extremely immature name-calling and personal attacks by some domainers who simply were lucky to get a few big sales on premium domains they bought a decade ago, and with that money, allows them to be “confident” to indulge in public displays of their neurotic emotional urges based on childhood insecurities that don’t belong in a professional domain setting of any kind. WE NEED A UNITED STANCE TO REPRESENT OUR DOMAIN INVESTMENTS PROFESSIONALLY, NOT TO BE TALKED TO CONDESCENDINGLY, ATTACKED PERSONALLY (either verbally or by online sabotage) OR HAVE TO GO ALONG WITH OLD SCHOOL BLOWHARDS WHO FEEL THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT REGARDLESS OF THE PUBLIC IMAGE THEY PORTRAY.
Bottom line is that we need serious, professional players who can present business-like opportunities to end users. I don’t imagine myself as one of these type of players, but it is a goal I’d like to strive for. Those domainers who’ve already become finanancially successful can be very helpful in this area.
Anyone else in on this with me?
Thanks Theo for bringing up this topic and taking the time to write a thoughtful comment.

@ Stephen.
Yes, I’m definitely with you on this. And I have begged for (real) professionalism in this industry for a while now (too), including when I wrote a Value Proposition for DomainSherpa.com (http://goo.gl/tCbPd ).
Not to harp on that whole Shane piece, which he quickly got intimidated from, but…he actually asked the wrong question about Rick (i.e., should he be bidding on names at his own event).
The CORRECT question to be asking – and one which I don’t know the answer to – is whether he’s SELLING his own inventory at TRAFFIC — which, if the case, is much more disturbing than knowing that he’s parting with his own money.
To be honest, I really don’t give a darn either way, because I have no expectations of becoming part of the ‘in crowd’ of this industry — and I’m perfectly fine with that.
Back to your point: Yes, there needs to be a concerted effort to start a professional association that focuses on (a) ONLY selling to end-users, and (b) primarily promotes FT assets.
I nominate you President.

Hi Gene,
Thanks for your input here, and your idea are definitely on path. However, I wasn’t referring to any particular article regarding professionalism, nor did I mention any specific auction or person producing an auction and doing anything wrong on the way they produced it. There’s been lots of vitriol about every domain auction ever held, including what was said about the FTDA. I was guilty of being unprofessional in how I handled criticism regarding the FTDA on a certain blog.
There are plenty of outrageous stories we could tell, but getting ourselves out of the mud and onto dry land is a responsibility we all have towards each other. I really would like to see us thinking and ACTING in this manner.
Back in 2007, I helped produce the first streaming live domain auction when I was executive producer of the Domain Roundtable and lots of people complained about almost every aspect of the production. My comments here were regarding certain domainers generally, and it could mean 2-20 people, myself, and all domain auctions, if the shoe fits… we just need to be more “business-like” publicly as we are in investing in domain names. Yes?
By Gene on Oct 15, 2011
@ Stephen
Yup, fully agree.

Owning “3DFoodPrinting.com” is a slamdunk high five or low six figure domain name — but this price will increase twofold after the first food printers hit the market next year. Good eye on the FT niche, and congrats on the buy. Keep us updated here.

I’ve got hologrammessaging.com/hologrammessage.com/hologrammessages.com, plus several variations of these. Think Princess Leia’s message for Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars
I’ve also got nanophone.com/nanophones.com, which I rate as my best future tech domains.
These domains aren’t for sale though, I will wait and see if such technology/gadgets become a reality and widely used by consumers, then look at ways of developing the domains from there.
I’ve also got an adult one, 3dtvbabes.com, which may have some good potential if 3DTV ever gets done properly (i.e. without the need for the 3D glasses for starters).
By admin on Oct 21, 2011
@ Gypsum
It’s great you’re thinking strategically, as I’ve pushed for in my attempt to educated domainers on FT domains — if you picked the right domains, as in picking domains even in current trends, FT domains will surprise people when they begin selling for significant money. Base your profits on the fact that most FT domains are bought at OOTB pricing just recently. Try to find a domain you can resell, with a current trend name or phrase, for an OOTB price. Then see what Giles has sold in his comments in the 3D thread here.

Verizon Files Trademark for ‘Hologram’ Stirs Rumors of 3D Smartphone
By WalletDomains.com on Nov 25, 2011
If Verizon gets the “Hologram” name as a Trademark, does all the “Hologram” names people have been registering go down the pan? Not sure what this means!
By Gypsum Fantastic on Nov 25, 2011
Interesting development re: Verizon.
However it’s a generic term so I don’t see how anyone who has previously registered hologram based domains prior to them registering the TM can be impacted.

Thanx for the credit! Last month I made $4.52 on Adsense on one Noomle site. It’s the only site I had Adsense. However, this month, it’s only up to 89 cents . . .
May I add, Noomle optimizes its sites for mobile? It puts a credit at the top, which I don’t like, but at least those sites are already viewable on a smartphone.

What do you guys think about this Verizon “Gee, AOL tried to TM “ADS.COM” year ago, although they failed, maybe if nobody is watching, we can get “hologram”"
My understanding of TM’s, from personal experience, is that if the word/phrase is generiic… no go. You can’t steal a word in common usage as “your own”, and this attempt by Verizon just makes me want to post “Boycott Verizon for being arrogant as*wipes!”
By Louise on Nov 28, 2011
They can’t be awarded it, seeing as how “hologram” is a dictionary word, and 3D phones are already out there.

Just one more example of how hand registering future trend names is something that I’ll continue to do going forward (versus buy names from other domainers in the aftermarket):
Last week there were tons of stories about printing human bones using inkjet printers (see http://goo.gl/0huQX ).
So I was able to grab BonePrinter.com .
Assuming that this capability becomes a reality – and that’s what seems to be happening -, is anyone going to argue that ‘wasting’ $8.00 on this name was like playing the lottery, or ‘couldn’t be worth anything simply because it was still available’?
Unfortunately, I can think of a few ‘big-time’ bloggers who would assert just that. You know, the guys who try to convince newbies to buy their 15K name, because it’s really worth 25K.
I think I’ll continue to ‘play the lottery’ (thank you).

Interesting article
3D Entertainment Industry to End 2011 on High
Dec 07, 2011
2011 has been a year of head scratching and worrying times for the 3D entertainment industry. Sales of 3D TV sets have being sluggish; the popularity of 3D movies has declined and there have been surprises all round that 3D gaming has not proven to be as popular as expected. However, there have been a series of positive headlines recently suggesting the industry can end 2011 with an optimistic outlook for 2012.
Despite endless reports in the mainstream media claiming 3D cinema is over, highlighting the decline in 3D box office sales, the last few months has seen a reverse in the downturn. 2D to 3D conversion has dramatically improved and big name directors are starting to leverage 3D film-making in ever increasingly powerful ways. Although the ratio between 2D and 3D ticket sales has indeed narrowed since the post Avatar honeymoon, 3D versions of movies are still performing better than their 2D equivalents, surprising when considering the spat of poor conversions released to an ever increasingly wary public.
In 2010, 25 3D films were released. By the end of this year 39 3D films will have been released.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon, directed by Michael Bay (originally a 3D cynic) re-captured some of the box office success of Avatar 3D. Half converted, half native, Bay’s futuristic 3D sequel claimed an approximate 70/30 ratio of box office sales in 3D’s favour. Bay even went on a personal mission to persuade cinema exhibitors to increase the brightness of their projectors (to save costs, cinema exhibitors often reduce the luminance of the projectors. Many movie goers have complained about the dim viewing experience of watching a 3D movie thanks to the glasses so low luminance can be even more of a problem for 3D).
More recently, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo has been described by many as the best 3D movie ever produced. Audiences have responded well to the Taxi director’s use of the 3D format which breaks away from the Cameron’s convention of using the screen as a window to a new world (positive parallax).
The opening tracking shot, which plunges from the Parisian sky along the railroad platforms and finally to the station clock, sets the precedent for a well-considered 3D movie that few would deny, is better than the 2D version.
“I think what Marty’s done is push 3D around a corner and given a gimmick a huge amount of heart and potential,” said Sir Ben Kingsley, one of the film’s stars.
Before the release of Hugo, Steven Spielberg’s motion capture 3D film The Adventures of TinTin was also praised for its intelligent deployment of 3D. It performed very strongly in Europe and is expected to replicate the success in North America when it is released on December 21st.
Films like Hugo, TinTin and Transformers 3 mark the start of a string of high profile 3D movies to launch next year by established directors. Ridley Scott’s Prometheus will open in June 2012 and is expected to follow in Scorsese’s footsteps by pushing the possibilities of 3D filmmaking. The Alien director has even echoed James Cameron saying he will never shoot in 2D again.
Other 3D films to be released in 2012 expected to attract a lot of attention include Disney’s John Carter 3D (March), Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit (released December 2012), James Cameron’s Avatar 2 (December) Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby 3D (December) and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man (July). A 40 minute preview of Andrew Adamson’s up-coming Cirque Du Soleil movie was presented by Vince Pace and James Cameron during IBC in Amsterdam and simply wowed audiences, even the 3D cynics.
UK cinema chain Cineworld has recently seen its share price increase thanks to an expected growth in 3D film admissions. Talking about Evolution Securities buy note on Cineworld, Evolution analyst Nigel Parson said “We expect 3D admissions to remain stable at around 20%-25% of admissions but these admissions yield a 30% ticket premium. Good business.”
His comment about such low yields may surprise people but if 3D films can generate a return on investment at such low ratios then this has can only be good news.
2012 could also be the year of the back catalogue 2D to 3D conversion re-release thanks to the massive success of this year’s converted The Lion King 3D. Movie classics such as Top Gun, Titanic, Star Wars, Finding Nemo and possibly Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park and Inception are all set to be given a 3D makeover. No doubt the industry will be watching audience reaction nervously, hoping the disastrous conversion flurry post Avatar is not repeated.
So does 3D in the home have an equally bright future? Well there has been recent positive 3D news here too. Consultancy firm Futuresource recently published a report suggesting that half of UK homes will own a 3D TV set by 2015 – higher than previous forecasts. However, the Futuresource report also acknowledged that 3D TVs will be purchased mainly by default rather than as part of a conscious decision to ‘go 3D’.
In the same report, the consultancy states that as of now, there are approximately 55 3D channels and demo channels and at least another 35 VoD (Video on demand) services offering 3D movie content. Futuresource Consulting’s Market Analyst, Fiona Hoy, expects that to rise by 15-20 channels and/or 3D VoD service. China’s State Administration of Radio, Film & Television had previously called for 10 3D channels to be launched in the People’s Republic by 2015.
Thanks to oversupply, prices for 3D TV sets have reached an all-time low with one able to pick up a 3D TV for less than £500.
3D technology has improved too. Traditionally expensive, passive 3D TV sets have plummeted in price, thanks in part to film-patterned retarder technology introduced to the market by LG. Consumers no longer need to spend £50 for each pair of 3D glasses as the new passive 3D TV sets often include several pairs of cheap, flicker free lightweight 3D glasses allowing for families and friends to enjoy 3D programming together. Passive 3D TV sets more closely replicate the 3D cinema experience without the flicker artefact of active 3D TV systems (discouraging many to buy) although current passive 3D technology halves the on-screen resolution. However, next year may see the launch of full resolution passive displays starting with computer monitors, which will deliver the next quality level of 3D (although initial prices are expected to be high).
The active 3D TV industry has also got its act together as Panasonic, XpanD, Sony and Samsung have joined forces to launch a universal 3D full HD active glasses standard meaning XPanD active 3D glasses will be compatible with each manufacturer’s 3D displays. The ‘Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative’ was released in September 2011. Universal glasses with the new IR / RF protocols will be made available in 2012, and are targeted to be backward compatible with 2011 3D active TVs.
Talking of standards, The DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting body) recently allied with the 3D@Home Consortium to encourage the development of standards for 3D TV. The move will also ensure that knowledge about 3D viewing is shared and that the bodies’ work is complementary, further facilitating the growth of 3D television innovation throughout 2012 and beyond.
3D content may still be thin on the ground but things are improving fast. 3D lifestyle channel HIGH TV 3D has expanded rapidly since its launch in April this year when it signed a 4 million Euro with Korea Telecom along with its sister channel FASHION ONE. In October, HIGH TV 3D launched in Norway on the CANAL DIGITAL platform and before that, HIGH TV 3D launched on cable television operator UPC in Romania. It recently also launched in Denmark.
In the UK, Sky 3D is firmly committed to the format, pushing more money into original 3D programming. Over the next few months, the UK’s only 3D channel will premier quality 3D productions such as Kew 3D, Bachelor King 3D, Beautiful Freaks 3D, Safari 3D and The Secret Life of the Rainforest 3D. London based distributor Off the Fence, has just closed its first 3D deal with Universal Full Band Media for its new 3D channel in China where two 3D channels will launch in January alone. Other distribution companies continue to achieve success with their growing 3D libraries including Electric Sky, Global Media Consult and LOG MEDIA.
The London 2012 Olympics will be captured and broadcast live around the globe in in 3D. The Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) are capturing the event in 3D due to the requests of the broadcast rights holders rather than as an option that ‘might be picked up’ by the rights holders. In September, OBS Chief Executive Manolo Romero told 3D Focus he was surprised at how high the level of demand was.
Following on from the 3D coverage of the 125th Wimbledon Tennis Championships this year, Sony has committed to produce 3D coverage of the world famous tennis championships on a greater scale for at least the next three years.
On December 17th, the BBC will be broadcasting the finals of mega hit Strictly Come Dancing in 3D on its dedicated BBC HD channel and a network of digital cinemas. The BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, will be releasing three multi-million pound budget 3D productions in association with Evergreen Films, Reliance Pictures and CAMERON | PACE Group. Walking with Dinosaurs 3D will be distributed around the globe next year followed by Africa 3D and Life.
Even ITV Studios will be venturing into 3D production with a stereoscopic version of its hit series, River Monsters 3D. France Telecom’s Orange TV have just increased their 3D offering with a distribution deal with My Zen TV and CAMERON | PACE Group are planning to launch a UK office to increase their market share in Europe, especially in 3D live sports capture. 3net, having revamped its consumer website and on-screen presentation, has significantly increased its output, airing 50 hours of original S3D content in December alone.
Despite persistent negative headlines about disappointing sales figures for the Nintendo 3DS (perhaps due to unrealistic sales forecasts), games industry trade website MVC yesterday reported that the glasses free 3D console is almost sold out in the UK.
With Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 both in the UK top ten, it seems that 3DS is proving very popular contrary to popular belief. It is also selling well in Japan although research has found that owners rarely use the 3D functionality after the first few weeks. However, what it does mean is that, in addition to the growing network of 3D TVs, there is a growing base of 3D capable displays in people’s homes capable of both 3D gaming and video playback. Today, Nintendo launched their software update to enable 3D video recording functionality.
3D technology is also set to improve throughout 2012. Digital 3D cinemas will exhibit more 3D presentations at higher frame rates, removing the annoying flicker inherent with 3D presentation. Avatar 2 and The Hobbit are two films being filmed at 48 frames per second. As the flicker issue is addressed in 2012, so will be the issue of dim images caused by 3D glasses. Real D has enjoyed success with its XLW Cinema System. The projection combination is capable of delivering up to 12 foot-lamberts of brightness, approximately 3 times the brightness of most commercial multiplexes.
For a brighter 3D experience at home, the new NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 glasses and the compatible Asus VG278H flat panel with LightBoost-certified desktop display are the “best 3D solutions for gamers on the market” according to T3 magazine. LightBoost technology makes the screen twice as bright as the original version. Gamers have often complained how the darkness of the screen can reduce the immersive experience of 3D gaming.
Whether 3D phones will be popular is anybody’s guess. This year saw the launch of the LG Optimus 3D which has not been the success expected by the Korean giant although Jon Peddie Research says 80 percent of smartphones will boast not just 3D screens, but 3D cameras in the next four years. Consumer 3D capture devices have got cheaper and cheaper. A range of 3D consumer camcorders have become available recently starting from as little as $100! Improvements have been made in glasses free 3D technology with companies like Toshiba and LG launching monitors that can track the viewer’s eyes to solve the sweet spot limitations of autostereo technology and SpatialView recently launched a low cost device to convert the iPhone 4 into a glasses free 3D handset. The company will also soon be launching the 3DeeScreen which will convert compatible laptops into glasses free 3D.
Finally, more good 3D news emerged yesterday as new evidence from The German University of Munich and the Austrian University of Salzburg suggests watching 3D TV does not increase the chance of triggering epileptic seizures.
So after a very difficult year for the 3D industry, 2011 is drawing to a close with some positive indicators that 3D may be around for the long haul this time. Many will hope 2012 will be a year that will deliver more answers than more questions.
While the recent positive news will be a welcome boost to the industry, it is important to stay realistic. Outside of the movie theatres, there is no proof that consumers will pay for or even want 3D entertainment in the home or on the move. 3D TV sales might be growing but that is not to say people will use the 3D functionality. As mentioned before, despite strong Nintendo 3DS sales, owners genuinely prefer to switch the 3D mode off so it is important to welcome the recent news with caution.
The 3D entertainment industry still has a high mountain to climb before the technology is embraced by the mainstream but at least the horizon is looking brighter than it did just a few months ago!

Good question about Verizon trying to TM “hologram”. if you do a tm search on google, you’ll see that several companies are trying to get the word TMed for their specific prodservs. Not sure they will succeed without a noun or adjective adjoining to make it a phrase instead of the “word”.

Congrats on your $1500.00 sale, @ Stephen! $1500 ain’t nothing!
By admin on Dec 15, 2011
@ Louise,
I see that my coaching you in the past year has paid off in your understanding of powerful domain names like this. You got this nailed, Louise.
Dang, I wish I could get you to offer up a free logo design in exchange!
By admin on Dec 15, 2011
Nope, it’s peanuts. But for that domain, at this time, and for strategic analysis of FT growth values, it’s something. Why? Because the domain name I sold would never appear on 99% of most domainers’ radar, and I have 800 domains in this category that promise to pay off in sales 10, 50, 1000+ when the time is right. With this simple sale for $1500, our company has positioned themselves to know the “path” that manufacturers are taking regarding ownership of FT descriptive prodserv domains.
The basic truth is that this sale (and others) have started a fire that is burning down the old media buildings, forcing the “powers to be” to look at buying new buildings, and of course they will be asking for advice on how to best avoid those “fires” in the future.
Everything is going as planned, and on time!
By Louise on Dec 15, 2011
The funny thing is – I tell you honestly – I had no idea of those before I registered it. Elliot Silver’s advice helped me alot when I was browing GAKT to see what’s hot, and I checked a few domains, and the dot com was available!
Afterward, by chance I checked to see if Google indexed it. It shouldn’t have been indexed, but it was:
Mobile Remote Deposit | Electronic Payments | Remote Deposit …
mobileremotedeposit.com
Mobile remote deposit provides time and cost-saving solutions through its TotalTransact
service that make processing electronic payments faster and more …
So it was preowned. Usually I register domains nobody ever thinks of. So I picked up a dropped domain.
It’s all work. Contacting end users and pitching them without making them feel like extortion, because you have “their domain.”
Ioana is out of commission until January. You have to get in line. Someone contacted me about her logos, and I forwarded his info. I’ll be happy to forward your info. She isn’t responding to my emails.
By Louise on Dec 15, 2011
@ admin said: “With this simple sale for $1500, our company has positioned themselves to know the “path” that manufacturers are taking regarding ownership of FT descriptive prodserv domains.”
That made me think. I get it. As one of the premier guardians (my term! my term!) of robotics domains, it is smart to sell a few at prices companies are willing to sell them AND USE THEM, so they become standard for the robotics industry.
The lock investors have on domains has affected the market, according to my observation. People would rather register crazy hyphen domains with hack extensions than cave to the domain syndicate.
It’s a tough market.
By Louise on Dec 15, 2011
It was fun to respond to your suggestion I find the prod/serv on MobileRemoteDeposit, because that investment worked out like that. Once I realized it was pre-owned, I researched the term on Google, and found a couple companies, linked above, have actual products by that name, as well as there is an article about mobile remote deposit:
How Mobile Remote Deposit Found Its Mojo

Now, you sell it for me for regular fee, and we can all get our logos done! How about it? Just kidding. I know you’re busy!

Wow, Gene… this is a great find. I feel proud that Successclick.com helped the scientists involved in discovering this new product that will ultimately change our lives for the better.
I recommend for those domain investors who are looking into new products to ‘bank” on to check out Gene’s link. Don’t ever say that Successclick failed to point out the treasure maps waiting for all their readers. There are millions of these types of domains to buy at OOTB prices. Time for profits, people! Just do your research!!!

By admin on Dec 17, 2011
Hi Leigh,
I didn’t personally work with them, because I was working with Professor James Hamilton. He worked with me, and after discussing his plans, and the bright team of students he had, I agree to sell the domain for much less than it was worth, as long as he would honor, in perpetuity, a bottom hugging backlink to my site http://www.successclick.com.
He has done this, and has honored it for over three years. The Domain was GrapheneSolutions.com. His class won the Wisconsin Science Fair in 2009 and ended up selling their discovery to a very interested manufacturing company, http://www.xolve.com. This is a corporation dedicated to introducing positive changes in the world.
Here is the link to the website of one of the most incredible men I’ve ever known: http://www.uwplatt.edu/~hamiltoj/
You can type in the domain name I created to see where it’s going! http://www.GrapheneSolutions.com (the domain I sold them)
Look at the bottom of the Homepage for each site,,,, it’s featuring that sweet backlink to http://www.successclick.com
Professor Hamilton is a man of his word. Period.

Nice work.
The potential applications of graphene are mindblowing.
I don’t think I’m overtalking it when I say very soon we’re all going to be acustomed to hearing phrases like:
“those were the days before graphene.”
By Louise on Dec 17, 2011
Interesting story – thanx for sharing!

@ Leigh
“I don’t think I’m overtalking it when I say very soon we’re all going to be acustomed to hearing phrases like: “those were the days before graphene.””
Stated very well.
Any non-food product – or industry – that you can think of will somehow incorporate Graphene in the coming years (or months).
And once it starts moving from the labs to real-world applications (…already happening), there will be very few businesses that won’t benefit from having the word “Graphene” in their corporate or product names.
It’s actually shocked me that each of the hundred or so “Graphene” dot-coms that I hold were still available — especially given the increase in news stories on the topic, lately.
I now have all the “Graphene” names that I need, and will be quite content to sit tight for 5-10 years while the ‘fruit ripens.’
And anyone who thinks that registering “Graphene”-related product names is like playing the lottery either (a) doesn’t invest enough time in keeping up with cutting-edge news, or (b) is simply a fool.
By admin on Dec 19, 2011
@Gene
Well said, my friend. I have the honor of knowing that one of the biggest players (scientist) in making graphene a part of our future bought a domain from me, and will forever list my blog http://www.successclick.com on his sites, because I chose to get a lower price in exchange for respect and recognition. However, I don’t recommend that to my clients! CHARGE THEM!
By Gene on Dec 19, 2011
@ Stephen
That’s really great to hear, and the rest of us are quite pleased to know that you’ve paved some ground for us with that placement.
When Graphene is incorporated into building supplies, sporting goods, tools, adhesives, textiles, and electronics, people will believe – and the latecomers will need to pay for quality names.

@ Gene.
A quote from another Guardian article about Graphene which refers to Geim condsidering applying for patent:
They are, of course, not alone in trying to get graphene to market. To begin with they thought about trying to patent or trademark the material or at least some of their techniques. Geim was disabused of the notion by the CEO of “a world-leading phone company”, Novoselov recalls. “Andre was at a conference in the US quite early on. He met this guy and mentioned the idea of intellectual property. He was told, ‘We know this material exists and we are doing our own research into it. Of course you can patent it if you want, but if graphene is half the material we think it is we will place 100 patent lawyers on it and you will spend the rest of your life and the GDP of your small island trying to fight for it.”
Brilliant!!
By Louise on Dec 20, 2011
@ Gene said, “Any non-food product.”
Graphene is ideal for exactly NON FOOD products! I know what you mean – not as an ingredient!
Consider the company which link I posted: ThinFilm.se. The CEO, Davor Sutija, stated in an interview in Forbes:
“Once Thinfilm’s tags are integrated with sensing technology, food can let us know when its spoiled, based on temperature and ammonia levels. Food can also be tracked – from “farm to fork” – making it easier to both source ingredients and determine where, say, an E. Coli outbreak came from. That’s just one possibility.”
talking about the printable memory which can act as sensors on food products, or even car parts, using graphene ink:
“For example,” Sutija says. “Think of your car. Right now you rely on a maintenance schedule for replacements, repairs, service, etc. But imagine that the individual components of your car can be tagged – your brakes can tell you when they need to be replaced by using its own sensors and reporting the information.”

Berkeley creates flexible, rugged, plastic electronic skin with carbon nanotubes
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/108987-berkeley-develops-flexible-rugged-plastic-electronic-skin-from-carbon-nanotubes
Exciting stuff!
“plastic circuits are incredibly exciting to medical professionals, too. An intelligent bandage could tell a doctor when it needs changing, or if the wound is infected. Some polymers are even OK for use inside human bodies — a pacemaker of the future might be a piece of electronic skin that actually wraps around the heart. Closer to home, an intelligent label could tell us if food is spoiled, and or flexible solar cells could turn any surface (including your car) into a power source!”

Thanks for this quote – and keep them coming. I think that the Graphene[product].com names are the ones that will pay-off best. I own GrapheneBrakes.com, and at the time of registration wasn’t even thinking about the sensor/informative aspect: I was simply thinking about the strength of brakes made from Graphene, i.e., they’d last forever.
And the news that Vorbeck has closed a $10M round, and already markets Graphene-based products is really exciting. Look for a ton more of those type of announcements in 2012.
I would also expect to see a few major, cover stories in mainstream publications on Graphene in the coming months — because it’s a really great story.
By Louise on Dec 21, 2011
The whole reason I picked up on “bendy” is because of the advantages of graphene: low cost; low-power, flexible display, not just the coolness of rolling up your tv and sticking it in your front pocket. It’s the practicality: students owning a tablet that wouldn’t shatter when dropped, that doesn’t drain battery in two hours. It’s green technology!

The last “FT Auction” I sold the much hyped “3Dconsole.com” for $400 ‘ish, I have no demand for “3D” domains any more, or waiting the 2-3 years for the domain to “mature”. I will take tomorrow and enjoy the day after.

@ Gene,
Thanks for the links, Gene. But dang… I have to wait four to five years to get someone in the manufacturing marketing end to say “ummm… what domain should we buy to represent our brand where people will instantly know what it is?”
A little mouse in the corner of their conference room squeaks out really loud ” DUMBSH*TS! HOLOGRAMTV.COM! THATS WHAT YOU NEED!”
By Gene on Jan 13, 2012
@ Stephen
Hopefully the name-selection process moves faster than the technology! And I agree that that’s a great brand/domain name.
I’m tempted to suggest that you file a TM on it, but I (…even as a TM lawyer) wasn’t successful doing so with my more generic filings, e.g., Hologram Coupon, Hologram Pad, Hologram Auction, and Hologram Pad.
So I can tell you that filing for marks on (what the USPTO deems to be…) descriptive phrases, isn’t easy.
But my theory in doing so was that, at least, I’d have a legitimate basis to object if they decide to grant the same TM to a subsequent applicant: So, in the process, what I’ve effectively done due to the unsuccessful TM filing is to shift the bulk of the IP value to the domain names, themselves.
By Gene on Jan 13, 2012
Sorry…my last listed TM application should has stated “Hologram Gambling.”
By admin on Jan 13, 2012
@Gene,
Wow, a TM atty! You should be advertising your services to all the domainers. I will do this for a commission!
Seriously, I know that several companies have already tried to file TM’s on the word “HOLOGRAM”. Really. And if they are powerful companies, will they get special treatment and secure TM’s on this generic word? As far as domain names, If I start to build out a site, all of them get the TM mark immediately, which establishes date of submission and the start point of time of usage (5 yrs) to be accepted publicly.
Thanks!
By Gene on Jan 13, 2012
Yup, but I stopped practicing a while back — but thank you for the promotion offer
Althought the USPTO will emphatically deny it, I’m certain that they give special treatment to ‘name brand’ firms — who have huge legal teams.
I actually made that charge against the TM examiner who denied my Hologram Pad application (which she, of course, denied). Regardless, now that my (denied) application is on-record, it’s going to be difficult for a new applicant – large or small – to make convincing arguments in favor of registration. What they’ll need to do is actually sell something called ‘Hologram Pad’ for a number of years, and thereafter claim common law rights that are strong enough to merit actual registration.
And on my Hologram Gambling application, I even brought in a fantastic TM lawyer-friend of mine to help me with the prosecution of the application, but it also denied.
The “5 year” milestone has more to do with acquiring what’s known as ‘secondary meaning’ (which are the rights that prevent folks from lawfully using the ‘Coca Cola’ mark for something like, plumbing supplies, or jet engines (i.e., something completely unrelated to beverages). It’s also the standard time period that needs to pass before the USPTO will place your TM on the ‘Principal Register’ (i.e., the gold standard) after it’s been on the ‘Supplemental Register’ (sort of the bronze standard).

You are the only FT domainer making any substantial sales so far. ‘Solar’ seems to be the first future tech to have made any noticeable impact on Sedo, Dnjournal, etc. Gives hope to other future tech domainers investing in the likes of ‘digital wallets’, ’3d printing’,'graphene’ related domains. Though ’3d’ domains seem presently like a waste of time, the 10 or 20 I own I won’t be renewing, maybe prematurely but there still seems like little sign that 3d websites are going to become all the rage anytime soon…

By Giles on Feb 1, 2012
@HGportfolio
thanks, I wouldn’t write 3D off yet, I am getting offers my my names on a regular basis, but nothing worth selling for. Its still too early for 3D to really make any big sales, but it will come.

re: huffingtonpost mobile banking article
Here’s another view that isn’t as positive (although the focus in this article will be more from the stand point of telcos)
http://www.tmforum.org/community/blogs/industry-insider/archive/2011/11/21/don-t-bank-on-mobile-payments.aspx
What are the views of people here to the potential of the following domains that I have owned from hand registration since about 2000?
BankOnPhone.com
BankOnMobile.com
Although still not much in the way of search volume on the terms I think I’ll keep them (although I’ve considered dropping them in the past).
By WalletDomains.com on Feb 2, 2012
@Gypsum Fantastic
For every negative comment, you will find 1 million positives. Pleople dont like change, a bit like when 3D was starting to be thrown at everyone!
Like your domains.

Cheers

BankOnMobile.com & BankOnPhone.com seem like two very defining mobile wallet domains – good job!
Paypal was negative on mobile wallet in early 2011, now it is ALL OVER promoting its mobile wallet solution! It’s totally on board.

Don’t know about you guys but I hate posting on this thread.
I think we’ve established the fact that the future trend auction wasn’t a mistake so can we now move back to “THE 3D DOMAIN REVOLUTION – THE FUTURE TREND WAVE STARTS NOW”
Cheers!

If you’re not going to make it, “sticky,” why not post a link to it on the right sidebar?
By Leigh on Feb 10, 2012
Just make it the homepage Stephen.
By admin on Feb 10, 2012
@HG,
You are correct that no significant price has been PUBLISHED about 3D domain sales, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t happened. At this point, 3D is still in the “holo” position of FT maturing. Most people think of “3D” as movies or TV sets. That’s definitely not the case, and there are notably… 3D Printers, 3D communications, and even 3D monitors in development, and close to being brought to market at consumer-friendly cost levels. Don’t dump your 3D domains.

@ Louise,
I hired two different Successclick web designer for WordPress. I don’t do programming. So what they give me is what they give me. If you would like to show me how to do what you suggest:
“If you’re not going to make it, “sticky,” why not post a link to it on the right sidebar?” I definitely would appreciate it, and maybe other FT domainers too, including yourself. Personally, I liked Leigh’s suggestion of moving all comments to “THE 3D DOMAIN REVOLUTION – THE FUTURE TREND WAVE STARTS NOW” in our blog. If you have an idea on how to make that suggestion a reality, we would all be impressed if you showed how to do that. You know I don’t focus on this blog as my only project, so I don’t have time to learn all the new tricks and better ways. Help from my FT readers is always appreciated!
Thanks for the suggestion, now let’s do it!

Hi @ Stephen,
BTW, heads up! Outstanding primer on the advancement of 3D printing, starting mostly at 2:12: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OhYvDS7q_V8
We made it sticky before, so that it appeared at the top – I think that is a good idea! Or you could put it 2nd place by making your new post sticky. The more recent post will appear at the top.
If I have to fix the length of comments I have to go into your code, and you have to create a login for me or give me your login . . . Splitting the comments into pages didn’t work with your theme . . .

@ Louise Thanks for posting the 3D Ted video. It’s a great primer. I’ve embedded it on Printing3-D.com.
FYI not sure if you know this, but if you want an embedded video to start further in, or a Youtube link that you sending someone to start part way though, this code will do that. Just add this code and adjust the minutes and seconds for where you want the video to start.

Great VIDEO on 3Dprinting, last year in July I purchased the domain 3DAMF.com because I read about this new printing format AMF (Additive Manufacturing File Format)and figured I would take a chance.
Thanks for sharing Louise!!!

Thanks for sharing – cool story.
In addition to 116 ‘graphene’ names in my portfolio, I hold ‘GrapheneSpray.com’
Given the large number of daily stories now coming out about graphene, I’d estimate that within the next 24-36 months there will be numerous Graphene-based (or Graphene-related) products offered for sale. And many, many more companies and offerings that leverage the word ‘Graphene’ in their name.

Has anyone tried using devhub.com to develop their domain names? I’ve just cobbled something together with my domain 3dfoodprinting.com and it’s all in all very easy to use. It’s free and you’re able to direct your domain name straight to it, plus there’s no big horrible banners advertising the site builder getting in the way. Plus you can add affiliate advertising links if you want. Anyway, as I’m suitably impressed thought I’d pass it on. Going to throw a few more domains at it…
By Duras on Feb 20, 2012
I tried with my CloudComputingBuzz.com (OBS! dont shoot me, i have no webdesign knowledges:)) It works.
My question is: how many sites can I have there?
By HGportfolio on Feb 20, 2012
Unlimited I think. And they also encourage you to build more sites to add to your ‘Empire’ as they put it, by offering a points reward system that allows you to get free upgrades, the more you add to each site. Man, they should give me a week in the Maldives for promoting them shamelessly like this…

I’ve heard of this site, probably visited it, but I definitely will look at it again (devhub) thanks to your post here. THX!

@Admin
…my pleasure, the site is already ranking top of page 2 of google when I type “3d food printing” and I’ve hardly added anything. What’s your opinion on setting up small Blog sites for domains rather than letting them just sit on Sedo, Afternic etc? Isn’t it better in the long run to develop them, although if one owns hundreds or thousands of high quality domains its probably not necessary!
